Your Voice Matters: Building Self-Advocacy Skills

Every adult deserves a voice in the decisions that shape their life. At Special O.P.S., we believe adults with special needs should have meaningful opportunities to express what they want, what they need, what they enjoy, and how they want to participate in their community. That is the heart of self-advocacy.

Self-advocacy means speaking up for yourself. It can include using words, a communication device, pictures, gestures, writing, or another method that helps a person share their thoughts. It also means making choices, asking questions, stating personal boundaries, and requesting support when it is needed. Self-advocacy is not about doing everything alone. It is about being included in decisions and being respected as the person whose life is being discussed.

Building this skill can start with everyday choices. At a Special O.P.S. event, a participant might choose which game to play, what song to request, where to sit, or which snack they would like. They might practice saying, “I would like to join,” “I need a break,” “Please explain that again,” or “No, thank you.” These simple moments help adults learn that their opinions matter and that it is safe to express them.

Supporters play an important role, too. Families, friends, volunteers, and caregivers can encourage self-advocacy by pausing to listen, offering clear choices, and giving enough time for a response. Instead of assuming what someone wants, we can ask. Instead of making a decision immediately, we can explain the options in a way that is understandable and let the individual lead whenever possible.

Sometimes people need help understanding information or thinking through a decision. That support should strengthen a person’s voice—not replace it. Supported decision-making is an approach in which trusted people help an individual understand choices, consider options, and communicate a decision while the individual remains at the center of the process.

Special O.P.S., we celebrate every step toward greater confidence and self-expression. Whether someone speaks in front of a group, makes a new choice, asks for help, or simply shares a preference, their voice deserves to be heard.

When we listen, offer respectful support, and make room for each person’s choices, we help adults with special needs become stronger self-advocates—ready to overcome challenges, persevere with confidence, and shine in their own unique way.
